SQL Azure after One Year
Presenter: Sarita Garg
Last year in January 2010, I gave an informational presentation on SQL Azure before PASS MN SQL Server Users’ Group. I talked about what SQL Azure is, why one should use it, how it works, pricing and licensing, and the future of SQL Azure. SQL Azure CTP1 was just released, was very well received and generated lot of interest. Being a woman SQL server professional, I thought what better way to celebrate women’s history month than give a presentation on SQL Azure after One Year, a topic which I am very passionate about.
I will review SQL Azure’s progress, month by month, during 2010, and will discuss some of the key highlights from the world of SQL Azure in 2010:
Expanded to North Europe and North Central US; Microsoft SQL Server Migration Assistant made available to migrate from MySQL and Access to SQL Azure; full service SLA for production application and services; SQL Server Management Studio, SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), BCP Utility, and SQLCMD all have been upgraded in SQL Server 2008 R2 to work with SQL Azure; vertical and horizontal partitioning; use of pivot tables; business edition database size increased from 10 GB to 50 GB; data sync service to perform bi-directional synchronization between two or more SQL Azure databases; performance tuning using procedure cache, I/O and some DMVs; new database copy feature allowing for complete backup of any SQL Azure database and many more.
