SQL Server Standard Magazine

The SQL Server Standard is the flagship publication of PASS. It was produced in print from 2003 to 2008 and all the available back issues are posted in the magazine archive for your viewing. In November 2008 we made the tough decision to stop distributing it in print. However, we are happy to announce that we are re-launching the SQL Server Standard in PDF form!

We’re going to reuse the great magazine name to call out premium content that will get posted right here on sqlpass.org.  Grant Fritchey, MVP and author, will be the editorial lead on this project: the guy who reviews abstracts and decides what to publish. Brad McGehee, MVP and author, will be the lead technical reviewer, tasked with making sure that the content is accurate, and we’ll have a real copy edit done to make sure the grammar and spelling is correct.

We consider the SQL Server Standard to be our highest quality content, written by a professional with 5+ years experience in the subject area. Members wishing to submit an abstract should meet the following criteria:

  • Have 5 years professional experience as a developer, DBA, report writer, database developer, or some other technical or functional area
  • Have been published formally as a writer (excludes blogs) on any of the SQL community sites (content will be reviewed as part of the abstract acceptance process) or have written a book that has gone through a technical/copy review process
  • Be a member of the Professional Association of SQL Server and have a profile on PASSPort

If you meet the qualifications, please send a title and one paragraph abstract to Grant Fritchey. We will review your qualifications and the abstract and follow up with you in 1-2 weeks. If accepted, we will forward you the details on how to proceed. Authors are paid $500 for articles that are accepted and completed as scheduled.

That's good news! I'm looking for a certain volume That's good news! I'm looking for a particular article. This is the problem I'm facing: The database (SQL Server 2005) holds more than 5 million customer records. These records contain sensitive credit-card information that must be encrypted. Implementing an application-side encryption solution involves VB6 and .Net technologies. How to achieve a server-side encryption solution that would have minimal impact on performance and business processes? Does anyone know a volume that refers to security; encryption; anything that helps. Thanks in advance. Submitted By: Silvia Lopes

Email Distribution It's great to see the magazine up and running, especially in PDF form, which means I can read it on my Kindle! Just a suggestion - it would be nice if there were an email distribution method for the newsletter. I find it hard to take the time to navigate to the web site and find and download the file. But if it showed up in my inbox on a regular basis, I will be much more inclined to give it my attention. Thanks again. Jerry Submitted By: Jerry Foster
