Small Regional Event with Big Impact

When the German PASS Chapter was launched in 2004, the founding members decided to self-finance the organization by running a yearly deep-dive, volunteer-driven technical event. With only 37 members at the time, the plan seemed very ambitious. But since then, the German Chapter has grown to more than 1,900 members in over 12 cities running more than 100 regional meetings a year. And our annual PASS Camp continues to grow as well.

What are the keys to success for our regional event, and how can your chapter run its own effective regional conference? Here are 5 essential elements. Read more.

So You’re the Boss Now...

I’m frequently asked a question along these lines:

I’d been happily plugging away in my job as a {DBA/Dev/Terminator/Warp Drive Engineer} for several years, when I applied for the manager position. I was surprised and thrilled when I got the job! But now that I’ve been in the job for a while, I find that no one on the team is thrilled with me. I know that I made a lot of changes. But they were all for the good of the team. What should I do to reconnect with my team and rebuild my friendships?

A common theme in this column, “Plays Well With Others,” is that the skills responsible for your success as a database professional have little in common with success as a leader and manager. And this scenario is a classic example. The solution to this problem is entirely people-oriented and has nothing to do with all those great SQL Server skills you’ve developed over the years.
