Dr. Marc A. Smith is a sociologist specializing in the social organization of online communities and computer mediated interaction. He leads the Connected Action consulting group and co-founded the Social Media Research Foundation, a non-profit devoted to open tools, data, and scholarship related to social media research. Marc is the co-editor of “Communities in Cyberspace” (Routledge) and co-author and editor of “Analyzing Social Media Networks with NodeXL” (Morgan-Kaufmann).
At Microsoft Research, Marc founded the Community Technologies Group and led development of the Netscan application and data mining engine for researchers studying Usenet newsgroups and related repositories of threaded conversations. He is an adjunct lecturer at the University of Maryland’s College of Information Studies and a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at Stanford University’s Media-X Program.
