“Managed Self-Service BI” and “Data As A Service” [200]
Session Category: Regular Session (75 minutes)
Session Track: Business Intelligence (BI)
Speaker(s): Melissa Coates
You know BI. Right? Well kids, traditional Business Intelligence is changing … you heard about the ambitious data analyst down the hall who created a mashup of data from the internal data warehouse + Excel + an Azure feed? Empowering knowledge workers is Microsoft's vision of delivering "BI for the Masses." In this session we will dismiss the hype & examine how this new world of "Managed Self-Service BI" complements Corporate BI in SQL Server 2012 and SharePoint 2010.

99 Tips for Tuning and Enhancing Analysis Services [300]
Session Category: Pre-Cons (7 hours)
Session Track: Business Intelligence (BI)
Speaker(s): Greg Galloway
Come and hear Greg Galloway share all his best tips for optimizing performance of Analysis Services and improving the user experience and reach of your cubes. This session is targeted to BI developers responsible for maintaining Analysis Services cubes and to DBAs who are tasked with monitoring and troubleshooting Analysis Services issues. Expect to leave with an actionable checklist of ideas to try on Monday when you return to work, with a deeper grasp of the internals of Analysis Services, with MDX optimization experience, and with best practices that ensure your projects succeed. This preconference session will focus on Multidimensional cubes and MDX but will briefly discuss the advantages and limitations of new Tabular models and DAX in Analysis Services 2012.

A Practical Introduction to PowerPivot [300]
Session Category: Pre-Cons (7 hours)
Session Track: Business Intelligence (BI)
Speaker(s): William E Pearson III
The objective of the course is to help those new to PowerPivot become familiar with the assembly of data from diverse sources into models that deliver business intelligence upon demand. Through this lab-intensive course, participants will gain hands-on exposure to accessing and relating data, and to employing the Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) language, to construct PowerPivot applications that support analysis and reporting throughout the enterprise. After an overview of the steps for constructing a PowerPivot data model, we begin a detailed, hands-on examination of the key components of a PowerPivot BI solution, to gain an understanding of how these components work together to deliver effective business intelligence. As a part of the practical exercises surrounding these components, we learn how to employ rudimentary DAX functions to create calculations in PowerPivot. We next begin an end-to-end “case study” that guides the creation of a working PowerPivot application, wherein we gain practical experience with all the steps involved, and create components that serve as highly useful templates that can be reused to “kick start” applications in our respective business environments. Once we have completed building the PowerPivot data model, we add the reporting layer, performing a detailed exploration of the new PowerPivot-enhanced PivotTable along the way, and create a simple Excel dashboard atop our application. Finally, we explore options to make our applications available as managed, enterprise level reporting and analysis tools.

Building a Business Intelligence Solution with SQL Server 2012 [200]
Session Category: Pre-Cons (7 hours)
Session Track: Business Intelligence (BI)
Speaker(s): Bradley Schacht
With the release of SQL Server 2012 there are many more tools available in Business Intelligence. This full day seminar will focus soley on the new features and changes to BI in SQL Server 2012 using an exciting new dataset. Subjects will include BISM, DQS, and Power View. You will learn how these changes affect how you build an end to end BI Solution.

Building a Write-Back Application with Analysis Services [200]
Session Category: Regular Session (75 minutes)
Session Track: Business Intelligence (BI)
Speaker(s): Bryan Smith
Write-back is a powerful feature of Analysis Services that provides the ability to input data directly into complex models. In this session, you will learn the basic techniques for Analysis Services write-back and how these techniques may be applied to address various business needs.

Building Your First Tabular Model [100]
Session Category: Regular Session (75 minutes)
Session Track: Business Intelligence (BI)
Speaker(s): Dan Clark
With the release of SSAS 2012 Microsoft has introduced a new BI storage engine. In addition to the traditional OLAP engine you now have the option to build your BI models on top of the new Vertipaq engine (This is the same engine used by PowerPivot.) To use the new Vertipaq engine you build a Tabular data model. A new query language DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) is used to query the data, create calculations, measures, and KPI’s. DAX is similar to the expression language used in excel and it should be easier to use than MDX and appeal to a broader audience.
This session is designed to introduce you to the process of building a tabular model in SQL Server Data Tools (BIDS rebranded). We will import data from a SQL Server relational database into a tabular model project and create relationships between the tables. We will use DAX to create and manage calculations, measures, and Key Performance Indicators. We will then test and explore the model using the Analyze in Excel feature in SQL Server Data Tools.

Business Intelligence in Azure: SSIS & SSRS Focus [100]
Session Category: Regular Session (75 minutes)
Session Track: Business Intelligence (BI)
Speaker(s): Jen Stirrup
What does Azure offer to Business Intelligence developers, and to those who use Business Intelligence every day? Come to this session to see how you can transfer your skills in SSIS and SSRS to add Azure to your existing Business Intelligence skill set. We will look at:

- the differences in developing SSIS packages that use Azure as a source and as a target.
- developing SSRS reports deployed to Azure.
- mobile devices and Azure such as tablets

Come and see the similarities and differences in using Azure SQL Business Intelligence, and learn to avoid some of the 'gotcha!' pitfalls.

Creating a BI solution with BISM Tabular and Power View [100]
Session Category: Regular Session (75 minutes)
Session Track: Business Intelligence (BI)
Speaker(s): Dan Clark
So you created your first BISM Tabular Model and need to expose it to your business users. What are your options? One of the most exciting new client applications is Power View. Power View is a browser-based Silverlight application launched from SharePoint Server 2010. It allows users to easily create ad-hoc reports, interactive data visualizations and presentations based on tabular models deployed to SQL Server 2012 Analysis Services (SSAS).
This session is designed to guide you through the process of deploying a BISM Tabular Model to a SSAS server. Once the model is deployed we will look at the process of connecting to the model from the Power View client and creating a simple interactive report. We will also look at optimizing a Tabular Model for use in Power View reports.

Dashboards...How To Choose Which MSBI Tool [200]
Session Category: Regular Session (75 minutes)
Session Track: Business Intelligence (BI)
Speaker(s): Melissa Coates
The Microsoft BI stack has a few choices for visualization. We will explore options, flexibility, limitations, and ease of use for creating dashboards & scorecards with: PerformancePoint Services 2010 * Reporting Services 2008 R2 * SharePoint Server 2010 * PowerPivot * Power View

Data Mining (It's not the size of your data - it's what you do with it) [300]
Session Category: Regular Session (75 minutes)
Session Track: Business Intelligence (BI)
Speaker(s): Adam Jorgensen, Devin Knight
This all demo session will focus on data mining from non-traditional sources. Many of you can mine from a nice clean dataset, but we will use the new Tabular model to consolidate data from disparate sources and perform some basic cleansing and mining that an end user can do once they know how! This sesion will be total audiece participation! Not a slide lecture and not one silly demo!
