Creating efficient and effective dynamic SSRS Reports..A case study [300]
Session Category: Regular Session (75 minutes)
Session Track: BI Client Reporting and Delivery Topics
Speaker(s): Steve Simon
Within the financial world, with its myriad of report requests and formats, end client requirements seldom take a rigid format. Further, it is not economically feasible to create a report for each permutation of end user requirements.
Within our organization this has led to a need for more dynamic reporting.
In this hands-on presentation, we shall look at some of the challenges that we have encountered and examine how we have overcome many of these obstacles.
Further, we shall have a “hands-on” look at how a few ‘static’ reports may be combined into a singled dynamic report that renders its data in a format commensurate with the end client requirements.
Dynamic SSRS reports have reduced the number of FTE’s required to support our reporting base and have facilitated the servicing of new requests and ensuring that we are both efficient and effective in our endeavours.

Is your enterprise reporting like the Red Queen's Race, running madly on the spot, and can't move forward? Reporting is an essential and highly-visible part of running a business. When data visualization best practices are not followed, then reports can mislead even the smartest business decision makers. I will discuss best practices around data visualization to help you win the Red Queen's Race and move your reporting forwards. I will discuss a variety of topics, including:
- Best Practices in Data Visualisation - guidelines from Tufte, Few and Cognitive Psychology Research
- Applying Best Practices to Visualising Large Data Sets
- Applying Best Practices to Multivariate Statistics
In this presentation, I will show best practices of data visualization using SQL Server 2008 R2. Come and learn how to win the Red Queen's Race by moving your reporting onwards and forwards to better visualization!

Data Visualization: Chaos, or Patterns you haven't recognized yet? [200]
Session Category: Regular Session (75 minutes)
Session Track: BI Client Reporting and Delivery Topics
Speaker(s): Jen Stirrup
Data Visualisation is an essential tool for Business Intelligence specialists. It reveals patterns in the data, which businesses can use as intelligence to perform better. Edward de Bono once commented that “Creativity involves breaking out of established patterns in order to look at things in a different way” – but business users need to see the patterns in order to be creative problem solvers!
I will discuss the perceptual and cognitive processes involved in finding patterns in the data. I will use SQL Server Reporting Services 2008 R2 to demonstrate some of the less well-known data visualisations, such heatmaps, bullet charts, and other visualisations based on Tufte's "small multiples" such as Sparklines and Sploms.
